Teaching and Learning at Bracken Edge Primary School

The main aims of Teaching and Learning at Bracken Edge Primary School are:

· To ensure the content of the curriculum

· To ensure learning is embedded into the long-term memory

Rationale

At Bracken Edge Primary School, we believe that teachers should be equipped to fulfil their role to a high professional standard. To do this, our curriculum and pedagogical approaches are research-based, focusing on strategies that fit with the cognitive model of learning. We support teachers by providing the tools, resources and professional development that will improve their practices and enhance their performance so that pupils in our school are taught effectively. Academic success is underpinned by our focus on happiness and confidence. Our nurturing approach prepares children for the future: building foundations for them to become kind, resilient and valuable members of society.

Principle and Aims

At Bracken Edge Primary School, we believe in the concept of lifelong learning and the idea that both adults and children learn new things every day. We expect that the children will learn respect for others, resilience in dealing with life’s challenges and will take responsibility for their own actions. We celebrate the success of all the children and will always endeavour to seek new ways to improve the quality of learning opportunities for our children. Learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Through our teaching and our rich and challenging curriculum, we equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to be successful later in life. To achieve this our policy ensures that:

● By improving the quality of Teaching and Learning we improve outcomes for all children.

● Underpinning principles of Teaching and Learning are clearly defined.

● Coaching and support programmes are clear to support teachers in developing their practice.

Continuing Professional Development

At Bracken Edge Primary School, we understand the importance of providing Continued Professional Development to all of our staff to ensure we maintain our high expectations around Teaching and Learning.

The Leadership Team focus on working with the staff team to refine pedagogical elements which support the Teacher Standards, alongside the visions and values of the school. We use and adapt the guidance outlined in the three Teaching WALKTHRUs books by Tom Sherrington and Oliver Caviglioni to support us on this journey. These books form coaching guides, which offers a range of strategies, based on key research, for developing pedagogical practice in schools. Teachers are also supported through planned in Instructional Coaching sessions. These coaching sessions focus on the implemented Teaching and Learning strategies

and are personalised to each teacher. The Coaching Team at Bracken Edge have all had training to ensure that these sessions are successful for all.

We also work collaboratively with other local schools to ensure best practice is shared.
